So many beer styles, so many craft breweries, and so little time. My name is Rob McFerren and I’ve been brewing and drinking beer professionally for over 20 years now. I love beer, especially craft beer, and this blog will try to cover all aspects of craft beer. As one of the founders of Wolf Creek Brewery, I have learned so much from my other brothers and sisters from breweries all over the US.
There has never been a more exciting time for craft beer and those who enjoy it! According to the Brewer’s Association, the craft beer market continues to grow even though U.S. beer sales overall were down in 2015. More and more craft breweries are opening and the trend does not appear to be slowing. In 2015, there were 250 new brewery openings which include microbreweries and brewpubs.
More people are drinking craft beer and I feel that it’s partly due to the wide variety of beer styles that are available now and the creativity of the brewers in stretching the flavor possibilities. The Brewer’s Association lists approximately 139 different beer styles but brewers can create an infinite amount of flavors that defy style guidelines. Sometimes this creativity can lead to new beer styles that are accepted by the Brewer’s Association and expands the official style list. The possibilities are endless!
In future blogs I will discuss these different beer styles and try to give you some insight to the flavor profiles of these styles. This will hopefully help you, the consumer, in choosing different craft beers to try. You will be able to visit your local brewpub, microbrewery, or retail craft beer store, and hopefully have a better understanding of the many different beers available. Also, please stop by Wolf Creek brewery! We would love to meet you and share some interesting beer with you.
I will discuss beer and food pairings which you can do at home (with a growler of Wolf Creek). I will also talk about the brewing process and what’s involved in creating a great, flavorful craft beer.
I hope that you enjoy the journey with me! Cheers!
